The University of Florence uses MDpro for its main web site and for sites "satellites".

In this article we will provide details on the project.

For some years the CSIAF (Centre Services Computing and Information of the Florence University) has promoted at the unit teaching and research of the Florence University the use of MDPro as CMS to manage the sites.

It was prepared an installation graph, to be more precise a theme, unified and changed only from the point of view of the colours, built under the constraints of accessibility provided by existing legislation.

For the management of the content was developed the CMpro module starting from the old module "Subjects", integrating it with all the features necessary to sites that require an articulated "tree" of pages.

The structure MDpro + plant graph took the name of "site-CMS format" and was then offered by CSIAF to any unit teaching and research that they so wished, along with a training course for editors that is held every monthly.

At the moment sites that use the site-CMS format are over 200 with about 500 users editors.

The main site of the University was long a site static, implemented and managed with HTML pages who had shared a template. It was then possible to adopt MDpro for the section "students" and finally now the entire site uses MDpro 1.0821.

The budget of the operation is clearly positive. The system has proved easy to use, stable and robust.

The office websites of the CSIAF receives very few requests for assistance or help from editors of the individual sites , a clear sign that, exceeded the initial learning phase , the use of the system is very easy for editors.

In these years there are never been problems servers directly attributable to the use of MDpro, but normal inconveniences that may afflict any server farm.

How imaginable the workload on the servers is very high (in June 2008 the average daily contacts, only on http://www.unifi.it, was over 1,300,000 amounting to about 22,000 visits - terminology Webalizer), but the time for response remains on average very low and the only problems have been solved thanks to a good job tuning of the platform (Apache - PHP - MySQL).

So MDpro has proved an excellent system to manage a very complex reality and not just for a portal of small-medium size, which typically is thought be the scope of use of systems like MDpro.

Michele Gianni, as manager of the office websites of CSIAF , is available to provide further details to anyone interested. Below you will find links and contact that may be useful.

This thing is a great news for MDPro. It shows how MDPro is stable and secure, two key factors for a Cms.
In addition demonstrates the large potential for MDPro: a professional Cms and adapted for every scope.
