(News) Categories

Duster

What are they?

Categories are simply top level categories for the news items, superseding topics. They allow you to separate topics into major subject areas. For instance, one admin, in his site for Scout leaders in his district, has categories for Boy Scouts, another for Cub Scouts, and still another for General information. By clicking on Boy Scouts, a leader can see all the news items (under topics) specific to Boy Scouts only and not Cub Scouts as well.

Another example would be a third party module developer who develops for MDPro, PostNuke and Xaraya (all Nuke CMS programs). He may use the CMS as a category with the module name as a topic

Categories need not be used and many MDP sites, in fact, do not make use of them. For many, the topics will suffice.

The list of categories (if they have been created) appears on the review page for submissions to topics. The first item is the title of the article. Underneath it appears a dropdown list of topics. Immediately below that is the field for categories. It is here that categories may be added, edited or deleted.

When posting news items under topics, you can assign them to a category or not, as you choose. Once you have assigned any article to a category, the categories block will appear on your news page.
