This feature allows an admin to include files for downloading. They may be either files located on one's own site or files located on other sites. This module functions very much like the Links module. Indeed, the primary difference is that Links has hyperlinks to web sites while Downloads has links to specific files for downloading, either on the local MDP site or on other sites.

The default location for files is upload/dl, although you can store them anywhere you like.

You will now see additional options, including the ability to add subcategories. Note that the program currently has a limit of two levels, the top level and one subcategory level. You cannot create subcategories of a subcategory.</p> <p class="comments">You have two options in entering information about the download.</p> <p class="comments">If downloads are entered from the admin section, the site owner is not notified that their download has been included. However, if the download is entered as any regular member might enter it and an e-mail address corresponding to the download site is entered, a notification will be sent to the site.</p> <p class="comments">The minimum information you should enter is the name of the file, a good description of it, the author's name and e-mail address and the author's website (homepage). Naturally, you should select the proper category for it, creating a new one if necessary. The file size is added automatically upon posting. It helps your site visitors determine if and when they might want to download a file. If they know a file is large, they may wish to download it later. Version numbers are especially handy when dealing with computer files although they have other useful applications as well.</p> <p class="comments">Note that exe files and other executable files are disallowed by default due to the large risk of viruses. If you want to supersede this safety measure and allow them, edit /config/dl-config.php and remove .exe from the restricted list.</p> <p class="comments">You may include a screen capture or other image of the download by uploading it to <strong>upload/dl</strong></p> <p class="comments">You can edit the download and add an image later. it need not be done at the same time the download is added.</p> <p class="comments">You may link to the page where the download is available or link directly to the file itself. Please consider the wishes of each site in determining whether to link to the download page or the file.</p> <p class="comments">You may enter relative links for the Page URL for files already located in your MDP installation. For instance, you might enter <b>/upload/dl/filename</b> to add a link to a file that has already been uploaded. This is the fastest way to add files to your download section when they have already been uploaded. You must enter the number of bytes if you wish the file size to appear. When adding a file by URL, the file size cannot be determined automatically. Enter the number of bytes only (no text) and they will be converted to kilobytes for files of sufficient size. </p> <p class="comments">Modifying files - If you modify any of the information about a download from the admin panel, the changes will be made immediately. However, if you make the changes by accessing the downloads module as any user would, the changes are held for review by the admin and are not made unless and until they are approved.</p> <p class="comments">File size limits - Remember that there are 3 restrictions to the downloads module's uploads process.</p> <ul><li class="comments">1. Downloads module limit in /config/dl-config.php </li><li class="comments">2. Upload_max_filesize limit set in php.ini (in the PHP configuration set by website hosts)</li><li class="comments">3.
