Post subject: Very Slow Site
My site is running extreamly slow. My main page is News and it is taking 44 seconds to load.

Anyone know what might be going on?

Maybe an answer to my own question... I had about 1400 autolinks... I removed all but 5 and the site seemed to improve drastically... now it only takes about 3.354527 Seconds to load.

Thoughts?

Try to enable the "render time option" in autotheme and download a utility like winmtr, ( http://winmtr.sourceforge.net/winmtr_bin.zip ) .

If you have high render times probably you have some problems on your MDPro installation or probably there are problems on your server.

If using winmtr you'll find data loss and high ping times, you probably have some connection problems.

Post subject:
I have that option enabled... doesn't it just show you the time it takes to render the a page? That is where I got the 44 second figure. Or are there more options somewhere when it is enabled?

I'm on a linux server... is there a *nix equivalant to winmtr

The server was freshly built about 2 months ago and a fresh install of MDPro also.

The slowness only happens on the front page which displays nesws stories.

Is there a way to limit the number of stories it has to lookup in the DB? Not the number that displays on the main page but the number it goes looks up while trying to render the page?

I have 2600 stories... Only about 50 or so are flagged to display on the main page.

ouff your site is very slow, check your logs file, check permissions in cache directory, try to disable all blocks in your home page and then if all work great you can reactivate your blocks one at time to found witch block can cause your problem, try also to check your permssions, restore original permissions and check what happen
jag7720 - Mar 17, 2007 - 08:42 AM
Post subject:
The cache dir is
drwxrwxr-- 3 nobody nogroup 4096 2006-07-19 08:50 cache/

I tried disabling all the blocks... the colprit seems to be the NEWS block.

News block ??

Post subject:
I guess I used the wrong words..... I'm referring to "News stories"... that appear on the main page.... It is in the settings. "Start page" = News

Even just looking at a specific topic it seems to take a long time. Some are longer than others...

My permissions on certain topics are

10 Subscribers Topics::Topic ::47|::61|::62|::63|::64|::65|::164|::165|::166|::167|::168|::169|::170|::171|::172|::175|::176|::177|::178|::179|::180|::181|::182|::183|::184|::185 Read

Will these permissions cause it to slow down... strange thing is, not all topics take a long time.

Please, can someone assist me with this issue? It is taking from 5-9 seconds for my site to load.

I have removed any special permissions on the site and that doesn't help. It is the main page and when you view a most recent Topic where it shows all articles in that topic that is slow.

All the other links on the site load in under 1 second.

Hello Jag,

Thanks for reporting the login problem! Also, I don't think they are ignoring you here. Most likely they are looking at and working with the code and trying to see if they need to fix it and will get back to you as soon as they figure it out. They are very good at that here, but sometimes you don't get an answer right away while they are working it out. Be patient and I'm sure they will get with you as soon as they can. I would help you if I could but I don't know what could be causing it either.

we can't answer because to know what is the problem someone need to check the server, check logs, db etc ... Page created in 6.422664 Seconds ...... this is very long and this is the time needed to your server to create your home page, I already told you to resolve your problem you MUST remove all from your home page, with all I mean ALL included all blocks, scripts, urchin stats etc .... then start to add all thing one at time and check what happen, the News module itself can't make your site so slow.
You need also to check your error logs, and/or maybe also your database maybe some tables are corrupted

Ok, I disabled every block I had on my site... one at a time... the loading time stayed the same, long.

I got down to only what was set in the "settings" as the "Start page". Mine is set to "News". With only that setting and no blocks my load times are 6-8 seconds. I changed the "Start page" to something else and my load times went to under .5 seconds.

What do you think?

Something is wrong but not easy to answer you if you don't give us other info's.
Have you removed all script like urchin etc ?
It is a fresh installation, upgrade or what ?
Are you sure all files aren't broken ?
Do you have read your error logs ?
Do you have tried to install a new copy of MD, example in a subdirectory, with a fresh database, then if all work nice you can try to transfer your db.
do you have verified your database and your tables ?
jag7720 - May 01, 2007 - 03:12 AM
Post subject:
I removed the google urchin - no change

It is a fresh install on a fresh server... about 2 months old

Not sure what you mean by broken. How can I tell if a file is broken

Error logs report nothing.

My database tables are fine except for this

Problems with indexes of table `md_phpbb_attachments`
More than one INDEX key was created for column `attach_id`

Problems with indexes of table `md_phpbb_sessions`
PRIMARY and INDEX keys should not both be set for column `session_id`

These should have nothing to do with this issue... but I may be wrong.

I have not tried a new install in a sub directory. I'm using 1.0.76. Would I install 1.0.76 or this new MD Lite? What is the difference?

I even tried different themes - no change
TiMax - May 01, 2007 - 06:27 AM

Yes try a new install in a sub directory, and yes maybe with MDLite Smile so you can check it

Try to replace includes/pnapi.php file with that
jag7720 - May 02, 2007 - 01:25 AM

That let me in. I'll do some more testing.

I noticed one thing

_AT_WELCOME and _AT_MYACCOUNT are not defined in the language file. Is that a mdlite thing or a theme thing?

theme thing

I'm not sure how this is going to solve my issue. I have several modules that don't seem to be available in MDLite.

I was going to build the MD lite site like my MDPro site but I can't.

I appreciate your help but this is not really where I wanted to go. I really want to fix what I am using now. Then upgrade. I have a lot of data in this system and I need to get the most out of it.

Do you have any other ideas as to what might be causing this slowness?

Have you actually ran a repair + optimize on your database from phpmyadmin? If it's only a problem when certain topics are displayed that would indicate to me that you've got a problem in your database relating to that topic. MySQL could well be having problems with the query that's being run, which would explain the slowdown

Judging by your site you've got a hell of a lot of news stories, and the news module is one of the most inefficent modules in regard to SQL queries (search my posts for some examples of this)

OK, but you didn't actually state that's what you done. You'd be able to see that from manually browsing through that database. These sort of problems are very hard for anyone to assist unless they have good local knowledge of your site.

Hence why it's very important to say exactly what you've attempted to do to resolve the problem

I selected all the tables and ran each of the following

Check
Analyze
Repair
Optimize

Then I just did the same thing only selecting

md_stories
md_stories_cat
md_stories_ratings
md_subcategories
md_subjects
md_subpages
md_subreviews
md_topics

All results state "OK"

OK, so next question would be, did this problem suddenly start happening? Or was it a gradual slowdown? If it was sudden then you need to think what you done on your site around that time. It could be something like adding or removing topics, or changing a load of permissions etc

It looks like the problem is with your topic 178, I have no idea how many stories you've got attached to that topic. I'm guessing a lot, but the support staff here will need some idea of numbers to progress any further

Sorry about that ...

It has been going on for some time now. The site has been active since Oct 2006 and it was put on this NEW server about three months ago.

There are only 11 stories attached to topic 178
Topic 177 has 10 and it takes 3.8 seconds.
Topic 176 has 10 and it takes 1.8 seconds.

It is almost as if it has something with the main page.

I took the "News" off the main page and went directly to topic 178 and it took 5.92 seconds
I put "News" back on the main page and that topic takes 6.41 seconds.

Do you think this could have anything to do with the HTML code in the stories.
All stories in topic 176, 177 and 178 have the same kind of code.

My process is to open our articles in Adobe InDesign copy the text and past it into an OpenOffice doc. Then make all the text Arial. Then copy it and paste it in the WYSIWYG..

Here is a sample of the HTML that goes into a story...

FYI I have been doing it this way since I started the site

Code:

<p> <font><font><font>Fr. Matthias Gaudron</font></font></font>
</p>
<p>
  <br>
</p>
<p> <font><font><font>The fact that the Church today is in crisis is almost undisputed. We are all familiar to some extent with this reality. Fr. Matthias Gaudron originally published this Catechism in order to both solidify our understanding of the principles behind the crisis and as an aid to help those who do not see the gravity of the current situation. We will provide a brief chapter each month in traditional catechetical format: Each question is followed by a succinct response, and then by a series of more detailed questions and answers that justify and elaborate the general answer. </font></font></font>
</p>
<p>
</p>
<div>
</div>

All the code doesn't display in this forum... there are a lot if div and span and style tags

Most of the topics, e.g. 259, came from straight/pure HTML and were put in the DB via an excellent script written by dmcl1
