How To Answer Questions in a Helpful Way

**Please read** Posting Guidelines for ALL MDP Forums

Please check the documentation and search the forums first

Many questions have already been addressed in the documentation or have already been answered on the forums. If yours is one of these, you are likely to find an answer much faster by searching for it than asking it again and waiting for an answer. You are also more likely to learn more related (and unrelated) information in your search.
If your question is a general one unrelated specifically to MD Pro, such as questions about CSS and HTML or PHP, consider doing a search on Google. If you know little of the subject, you would benefit from a basic understanding you can gain from sites that go into various subjects in detail. It's very much like in school where you have to take some classes before you can take others, such as class 101 before class 102 as class 102 will build upon what you learned in class 101.
Please understand that it's not that we are unwilling to help, it's that in some cases we are unable to help. Without a basic understanding of some subjects, we can't make you understand. You may need to educate yourself through other resources first. We may be able to help by recommending some of the better resources and will gladly do so if we are able.

Security is paramount

The MAXdev team takes security issues very seriously. Discussing potentional security issues in public serves no purpose and can help spread the problem. It is for this reason that we request that if anyone has any security concerns or breaches emails us at security@MAXdev.com Please provide as many relevant details about your server and MDPro installed modules as possible

The best answers are likely to be at the source

If you are having problems with a third party module, or your question concerns one, you are more likely to get help on the support site of the developer (if they have one, as most do). We (staff and fellow users) will try to help you, but the people who develop the modules will know more about them than we do. You should contact them if we are unable to help you here or even go to them first.

Use the latest release

We only support the latest stable MAXdev release. New releases fix bugs and security issues, so support cannot be given for old versions. It is in your best interests to make sure you are up to date!

Try to stay on topic

If you're posting questions under an existing forum topic, please make sure your question is directly related to the topic being discussed. If you aren't sure, please raise a new topic, as this makes it much easier for people to find relevant posts using the search feature

Do not ask for help privately

Do not send a PM (private message), e-mail message, ICQ message, or use any other means of communication other than posting in these forums asking for help. These forums are the only place to ask us for help. Your request will be seen by more people and the chances of getting assistance will be greater. It is rude and selfish to ask for private assistance. Other members of the community can benefit from the solution to your problem. If you haven't gotten an answer to your posting, the reason is likely to be that no one who has seen it knows the answer. You can be patient and hope someone will come up with an answer, you can search for an answer through other resources, you can use that organic computer that keeps your ears apart to deduce a solution, or you can try something else. If you ignore this and ask anyway, you will be referred back to this message. We don't want anyone to take offense at this, and please remember that we are all volunteers, no one is paid for their help, no one owes you anything, and we all have lives away from MAXdev that occupy our time. If we can help, we will do it here, publicly, where others can benefit from it and we will do it on our schedule, not yours.

Respect OpenSource Software
The MAXdev team understands that you may wish to remove visible sign of the CMS running your site. If however, you modify the sourcecode to remove the MD-Pro generator tag, we will refuse you support and ban you from our site. We worked long and hard to bring you this software, if you can't show a bit of respect for that then you're not welcome at our site.

Please state your question or comment as accurately as possible

You help people who might help you by stating your problem without them having to open your message to see what it is. Some won't bother making that effort if you won't take the time to state your problem or question clearly. Also, you help other people who scan subjects looking for answers. For that reason, your subject line may be edited for clarity if it is vague, but it is much better if you eliminate the need to do so by stating it properly on your own. All people helping you, staff or other users, are volunteers. Honor their time and assistance. Help them by making it easy for them to help you.

Give enough information for people to help you

Depending on the nature of your question or problem, it may be important for you to state whether your installation is on a Linux, Windows or other OS web server or personal PC or other relevant information. Please give it when you post your problem or question. However, please don't post large blocks of code unless your are asked to do so. You should always state which version of MD Pro you are using. The rapid state of advancement of MD Pro means a lot of changes, big and small, from one version to the next. We all need to know which version you are referring to.

Don't say anything like "Noob question, Urgent, Need help"

None of those tell us anything about the nature of your question or problem. Of course you need help! These are support forums. Why else would you be here? It doesn't matter if you are brand new to MDP or an experienced user. If you have a question, please state it. Your question is no more important than anyone else's so please don't say urgent or important. There is no preferential treatment here.

Don't apologize for your less than perfect English

The multinational nature of MD Pro means we have users from all over the world. Also, since English is the most commonly spoken language in the world, with many people speaking it as a second language, many people will ask questions here on the English support site rather than on one of the MD Pro support sites in their native language. We applaud your effort at communicating in English. If your meaning is not understood, we will ask you for clarification rather than be critical of your less than perfect grammar. We expect all other users to do the same. (Likewise, if you don't understand our answers, we expect you to ask us for clarification.) If English is your only language though, we expect you to speak as clearly as you can and not make up your own words and abbreviations. Remember, the purpose of language is to communicate! Write in clear, grammatical, correctly-spelled language. Don't TYPE IN ALL CAPS, all lowercase, or VarY tHe cAsE wiTHin wOrdS. Punctuate. Don't use run on sentences. Use paragraphs and avoid large blocks of text. Generally, if you write like a semi-literate boob you will very likely be ignored. Boobs are only interesting when they are on women.

Remember your manners

When you have found an answer to your question or problem, let us all know by posting it. You help others by doing so, including those wondering if you found your answer as well as those with a similar question. Nobody owes you an answer. Giving thanks for assistance, whether your problem was resolved or not, is always welcome and appreciated. Be thankful for the effort even if the results are not what you wanted. Remember that when people try to help you, they are doing you a favor.

Don't Crosspost

MAXdev staff only have a limited amount of time available each day to resolve any users problems. Posting the same question in several forums (that includes between our international support sites and the .com site) just wastes our time. If you've asked in your local support site and not received an answer after a reasonable amount of time, you may ask at MAXdev.com and feedback the answer to your local MAXdev site.

How To Answer Questions in a Helpful Way

Don't guess. These are technical forums and people are looking for technical answers. They are not looking for idle chit chat and you should not answer for the sake of answering. If you aren't absolutely certain of the answer, say so! An authoritative-sounding wrong answer is worse than none at all because it puts someone on the wrong path. If you can't help, don't hinder. Don't make jokes about procedures that could trash the user's setup — the ignorant and unknowing might interpret these as instructions and do them. Ask probing questions to elicit more details. Even people trying to reach a solution forget to provide enough details to be helped. If you're good at asking the right questions, the person with the problem will learn something, as will others, and you may also. Try to turn an incomplete (bad) question into a good one. If you're going to answer the question at all, give good value. Don't suggest cumbersome workarounds when somebody is using the wrong tool or approach. Suggest good tools. Reframe the question. Suggest the easiest way to accomplish the desired goal, not the hardest. Help the community learn from the question. When you field a good question, ask yourself “How would the relevant documentation or FAQ have to change so that nobody has to answer this again?” Then send a suggestion to the document maintainer. If you did research to answer the question, demonstrate your skills rather than writing as though you pulled the answer out of the air. Answering one good question is like feeding a hungry person one meal, but teaching them research skills by example is teaching them to grow food for a lifetime. "Give a man a fish and you've fed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime."

Duster and all MAXdev staff
