Post subject: Tell me what you think - outdoors hunting website

Ok guys, here it is my site http://www.mywildplace.com if you do not eat meat please do not go. This a hunting outdoors site, any suggestions are welcome. There are a couple of things I want to change, in the forum, instead of an envelope I would like a little bullet, the header is going to change, there is a landscape I need to get out to and take a picture of and that will be the header pic. I spent about 3 days setting it up, starting to add the news articles and links now. I also want to change the forum theme to mdrebel, or if anyone has a good outdoors theme for a forum let me know. In the subjects corner, top right hand side read the cooking story and let me know what you think.

Thanks for the warning. I was a vegan for a couple of years some years back but not a fanatic about it. I'd go to dinner with friends who were eating steaks while I enjoyed my vegetables. Still, I know there is a fanatical component to the ranks of vegetarians and your thoughtful warning would prevent any of them from righteous indignation.

As to your site, it has a nice looking theme and the images at the top of the page get the point of the site across immediately and attractively. You have a typo in your welcome message (decicated), which could be humorous when pronounced (as in dessicated meat). You also have a run on sentence. What you mean to say is:

Welcome to My Wild Place. Sit back, prop your feet up and make yourself at home. This site is dedicated to everyone that loves the wilderness in one shape or another.

I would change that to

Welcome to My Wild Place. This site is dedicated to everyone that loves the wilderness in one manner or another. Sit back, prop your feet up and make yourself at home.

I was going to suggest moving the list of forums up a bit (over the forum posts) until I noticed that you have a link to them at the top of the page so never mind that.

Please see this post The new "new" images are easier to read and there is enhanced functionality in the Members List and Recommend Us modules mentioned. The fixed downloads and FAQ modules did make it into later distributions so you have those already.

You may want to reconsider your answer choices on the poll to make it meaningful. For instance, do people not hunt because they have no desire or opportunity to do so? Some city dwellers are far from any hunting grounds. Do they not hunt because they are opposed to killing game? Do they not hunt because they are vegans and don't eat meat?

You can imagine how I feel about your forums (aaaggh - all that gray). You did say you were going to change the theme though. Meanwhile, take a look around in MDForum,. There is a feature that matches the colors to your theme that should pick up the very pale blues of your theme. My CMSR sites forum (version 1 something of MDForum) matches the site and I don't recall doing anything special to it. I certainly did not create a theme to match.

On the forums, check the grammar for the description of General discussion. Below it, the g is missing from hunting in two instances and in other forum descriptions. At the very least, it should be huntin' (with an apostrophe) if you want to indicate how some people pronounce it with a dropped g. Otherwise, it should read

Hunting Tales
Got a good hunting story? Share it here.

I favor using humor so I would change descriptions to

Cooking
Ways to cook that meat you brought back to camp (even if it came from the supermarket).

Firearms
Shoot your mouth off about what you shoot with.

Hog Hunting
Hunting those little piggies (and the big ones that make you think you need a much bigger truck).

OR

Hog Hunting
Hunting those little piggies (and their much bigger relatives).

You have a lot of words capitalized that should be lower case, too many for me to want to mention.

This:
After the Fact
Did you survive an event like a hurricane, earthquake, gotten lost, plane crash - any thing that made you use your survival skills. Post your story here. Let others learn from what happened to you.

should be changed to this in order to be grammatically correct:

After the Fact
Did you survive an event like a hurricane, earthquake, plane crash or have you gotten lost, anything that made you use your survival skills? Post your story here and let others learn from what happened to you.

Also, I would drop the "all about" and "everything about" in favor of "anything about". The first two are simply wrong. No forum without even so much as a single post has all or everything about a subject. The third indicates the intent of the forum, which is that any aspect of the subject may be discussed.

That concludes my review. It looks like your site is coming along nicely.

Thank you VERY MUCH - what you suggested has been changed. You are right about some letters being in caps, dont know why I did that - oops. Anyway some of them are fixed now. Again, thank you very much. Should anyone else have suggestions about the site, please post a review. I do not know quite what to do with the colors of the forum, gray is a good camo color, thought about adding some green in there with it.

Oh yea, I forgot, you mentioned the faq section - I have that module turned off since I am not using it right now.

You're very welcome. I'm glad our first post here was such a good one. It reminded me of a few things to add in the guidelines.
Capitalizing words that shouldn't be capitalized is all too common an error these days, particularly on websites. I don't want to get started on the poor use of spelling and grammar I see so frequently. Where do people get the idea that alot and loosing are real words? Sheesh!

Review the forums listings when you can do so at your leisure as there are still many errors to be found, which you acknowledged.

I made an error in one correction, You should insert a "you" where indicated in bold in

After the Fact
Did you survive an event like a hurricane, earthquake, plane crash or have you gotten lost...

Camouflage may be good in the bush but not on forums, You want people to see them and they shouldn't be hidden. For now, you might want to copy your present theme and just change the colors, substituting the darker blue used as the background color for the page and tabs for the darker gray in the forum headings and the pale blue for the lighter gray used for the descriptions.

My reference to the FAQ and downloads module was to let you know that you have the corrected versions as they did make it into later distributions (after 1.072). The other modules and packages mentioned in that article did not and you may want to download them and add them to your site.
